In short

  1. OpenAI began showing ads to adult users on ChatGPT's Free and Go plans in India in August 2026.
  2. OpenAI's ad policy only allows financial advertisers it has approved, case by case, with extra checks. Reports say its July 2026 opening for finance and insurance ads covered US advertisers.
  3. We haven't found any OpenAI statement that Indian insurers can run ChatGPT ads today. Treat claims that they can with care.
  4. IRDAI's advertising rules apply on every channel, including AI chat. Getting ready now means less rework later.

In August 2026, ChatGPT started showing ads to users in India. With more than 100 million weekly users in the country, insurers are asking the obvious question: can we be there when someone asks ChatGPT "which term plan should I buy"?

The short answer, as of today: probably not yet, and nobody should promise you otherwise. Here's what's actually been announced, what OpenAI's policy says about financial and insurance ads, and what insurers can do in the meantime.

What's live in India

  • When: OpenAI announced ads for India in the last week of August 2026. They launched with about 50 brands, working with the agencies WPP and Omnicom.
  • Who sees them: adult users on the Free and Go plans. Paid plans such as Plus and Pro don't show ads.
  • Where they appear: labelled as sponsored, at the bottom of ChatGPT's answers.
  • Buying: self-serve ads opened to Indian advertisers in September 2026, with a minimum daily budget of ₹725.

ChatGPT ads already ran in the US from February 2026 and have since expanded to Europe.

What OpenAI's policy says about financial ads

Financial and legal services were largely kept out of the early rollout. That has started to loosen:

  • April 2026: OpenAI said medical, legal and financial advice conversations were "no longer categorically blocked from ads by default". That's about where ads can appear, not who can buy them.
  • May 2026: OpenAI began letting some financial services brands into its ads pilot.
  • July 2026: reports said OpenAI opened ads to selected US health and financial advertisers. Insurance was among the finance categories, alongside credit cards, loans, investment services and payments. The same reports said financial services ads outside the US were generally still not allowed.

OpenAI's current policy says it "may allow ads from approved financial advertisers", on a case-by-case basis. Restricted categories may need extra advertiser verification or manual review, covering the advertiser, the creative and the landing page. Some financial products are banned outright: cryptocurrency, credit repair, debt settlement and debt assistance.

OpenAI also keeps ads out of sensitive conversations, such as mental and personal health and politics. Health insurance ads may be the slowest to get in, because they sit right next to those topics.

What we couldn't find: any OpenAI statement that insurers, or any financial advertiser, can run ChatGPT ads in India today. If an agency or a sales deck tells you otherwise, ask for OpenAI's written approval for your account.

IRDAI's rules still apply

Whenever ChatGPT ads open to Indian insurers, IRDAI's rules will apply to them as they do to Google, Meta or TV. In 2024, IRDAI replaced its 2021 advertising regulations with a principles-based framework, under its 2024 Protection of Policyholders' Interests regulations and master circulars. The main points for insurers:

  • Board-approved advertisement policy. Every insurer must have one.
  • Advertisement committee. It approves creatives internally, instead of each ad being filed with IRDAI as before.
  • No misleading ads or unfair trade practices. The ban covers claims beyond what the policy offers, hidden exclusions, unrealistic benefits and illegible text, on every channel, including social media.
  • Registered name and trade name are mandatory in ads.
  • No market-ranking claims. Any rating or award must come from an independent source, and be credited.
  • Life products need benefit illustrations showing guaranteed and non-guaranteed benefits. Ads for linked, annuity and participating products must explain that the policyholder bears investment risk and that projected bonuses aren't guaranteed.
  • Third parties can only run institutional ads that build the insurer's brand, not ads that push people to buy a policy.

A conversational ad raises one more question: will the person know it's an ad, and not ChatGPT's own advice? OpenAI labels ads as sponsored. Your copy should make that clear too. A creative that reads like an AI recommendation is the kind of thing IRDAI's misleading-ad rules are written for.

What insurers can do now

1. Get your house in order for AI search. People already ask ChatGPT about insurance, ads or no ads. Its answers draw on what it can find and trust:

  • clear product pages that explain cover, exclusions and claims in plain English;
  • your claim settlement ratio, from audited figures, presented the way IRDAI requires;
  • consistent company details everywhere: your website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn and comparison sites;
  • structured data on your website, so machines can read who you are and what you sell.

2. Prepare your approval paperwork. When OpenAI opens financial ads in India, it's likely to ask for proof of licence, as Google and Meta do. Keep your IRDAI registration details, legal name and authorised contacts current and matching.

3. Draft creatives for conversation. A ChatGPT ad sits under an answer to a real question. Write for that moment: a line that answers the question, such as "See how much term cover your family needs, in two minutes", says more than a slogan. Run it past your advertisement committee now, so it's ready.

4. Keep investing where it works. Google Search and Meta remain the channels where Indian insurers can buy leads today, with Google's Financial Services Verification and IRDAI's rules in place. Don't move budget to a channel that hasn't opened. Here's how we run insurance lead generation.

How we'll keep this updated

This is moving fast. We check OpenAI's ad policy and announcements regularly, and will update this page, and its "last checked" date, as soon as OpenAI says anything about financial advertisers in India.
